OVERVIEW
DOS BOSS is a utility program designed to maximize the productivity of all
microcomputer users and shorten the learning curve for first time users of
DOS. In summary, DOS BOSS features include:
1 Menus for selection of programs and DOS commands.
2 Single keystroke menu selection execution.
3 Fill-in-blank DOS command shell.
4 Directory tree file manager.
5 DOS help windows and learning aids.
6 Optional text and screen colors.
7 Optional automatic or manual screen dimmer.
8 Optional security passwords.
9 DOS command batch file editor.
10 Optional microcomputer usage log.
11 Single line text editor/typewriter.
12 Optional sound on error/prompt.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
1 IBM personal computer or compatible.
IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines
Corporation.
2 One hard disk drive.
3 One or more floppy disk drives.
4 320K or more RAM (random access memory).
DOS BOSS is not a TSR (terminate and stay resident) program.
5 Color or monochrome monitor.
6 Line printer configured as LPT1.
7 MS-DOS/PC-DOS version 2.1 or later.
MS-DOS is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

INSTALLATION
1 Make a backup copy of each DOS BOSS distribution diskette. Your DOS
manual will explain how to do this.
2 Check the DOS BOSS distribution diskette(s) for a file named README.DOC.
Any updates to this manual or product support information may be found
here. More information on README files is included in the APPENDIX of
this manual. If this file is not present, continue with the installation
process.
3 Insert DOS BOSS distribution diskette #1 into drive A:
4 At the DOS prompt, enter the following commands to install DOS BOSS:
C: <ENTER> Set DOS BOSS drive
MD\BOSS <ENTER> Make DOS BOSS directory
CD\BOSS <ENTER> Set DOS BOSS directory
COPY A:*.* C:\BOSS <ENTER> Copy DOS BOSS files
5 Repeat the above COPY command for any additional distribution diskettes.
6 At the DOS prompt, enter the following command to execute (load and run)
DOS BOSS:
BOSS <ENTER>
7 After several seconds, the CONFIGURATION screen will appear. When asked
for DOS BOSS DRIVE:PATH, enter the following data but do not depress the
Enter Key.
C:\BOSS
8 Depress the Escape Key to save the above setup data, load the MAIN MODULE,
and exit to the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU.

9 Depress the W Key to load the UTILITIES MODULE.

10 Depress the 5 Key to select BATCH FILE MAINTENANCE.

11 After the BATCH FILE MAINTENANCE screen appears, enter the following to
determine if an AUTOEXEC.BAT file currently exists. Refer to section 5 of
this manual for more information about BATCH FILE MAINTENANCE if neces-
sary.

If an AUTOEXEC.BAT file does not exist, the following message will appear
in the MESSAGE LINE box:
DRIVE:PATH\FILENAME.EXT Error
12 If an AUTOEXEC.BAT file does not exist, enter the following:
PATH C:\DOS <LINE 01>
PROMPT $P$G <LINE 02>
CD\BOSS <LINE 03>
BOSS <LINE 04>
If DOS files are not located in a directory named \DOS, change \DOS as
required to specify the correct path. All DOS Operating Files must be
installed in this directory.
13 If an AUTOEXEC.BAT file does exist, add the following:
PATH C:\DOS <FIRST LINE IF NO PATH>
CD\BOSS <NEXT TO LAST LINE >
BOSS <LAST LINE >
If a PATH command already exists, modify this command to include a path to
the DOS Operating Files. Refer to your DOS manual if necessary.
14 Depress the F03 Key to save the above AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

15 Restart your microcomputer. If the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU does not appear,
refer to the APPENDIX for TROUBLE SHOOTING information. The DOS BOSS MAIN
MENU is the screen with menu selections or activity codes A thru X.
16 Set up DOS BOSS according to the SETUP section of this manual and your
system requirements.

1 Depress the W Key to load the UTILITIES MODULE.

2 Depress the 2 Key to load the OPTIONS MODULE.

3 After the OPTIONS MENU appears, enter all OPTIONS except those related to
ACTIVITY LOG. Refer to section 2 of this manual for more information
about OPTIONS. Depress the Escape Key to save setup data and exit to the
OPTIONS MENU.

4 Depress the F08 Key to load the UTILITIES MODULE.

5 Depress the 7 Key to select MAIN/SUB MENU LIST.

6 Set up the printer according to the displayed instructions. Depress the
Enter Key to print the MAIN/SUB MENU LIST. The UTILITIES MENU will
appear after completion of printing.

7 Depress the Escape Key to load the MAIN MODULE and exit to the DOS BOSS
MAIN MENU. If you have a good understanding of DOS, steps 8 - 14 may be
omitted.

8 Depress the X Key to select DISK OPERATING SYSTEM.

9 Depress the 2 Key to select DOS COMMAND SHELL - DIRECTORY/PATH/TYPE.

10 Depress the P Key while holding the ALT Key to select the PRINT option.
The ALT P box should be blinking.

11 Depress the F06 Key to select PATH - DISPLAY TREE.

12 Enter the /F parameter option to include Tree Files.

13 Depress the Enter Key to print the TREE report.

14 Print additional TREE reports for any other hard disk drives (D:, E:,
etc.) in your system.
15 Use the MAIN/SUB MENU LIST for a worksheet. Assign MAIN and SUB MENU
ACTIVITY NAMES based on how your microcomputer is utilized. Use names
that are easy to understand.
16 Next to the above names, write the DOS syntax required to execute activity
programs or refer to the TREE report.
17 Locate each program name on the TREE report and flag those with a .BAT
file name extension.
18 Depress the Escape Key to return to the DISK OPERATING SYSTEM MENU.

19 Depress the Escape Key again to return to the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU.

20 Depress the W Key to load the UTILITIES MODULE.

21 Depress the 4 Key to select ACTIVITY DEFINITION.

22 Refer to section 4 of this manual and enter names, codes, and commands for
programs listed on the above worksheet. Also enter a DOS BOSS NAME which
will appear as the title of the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU.
23 Depress the Escape Key to save the above setup data and exit to the
UTILITIES MENU.

24 Depress the Escape Key again to load the MAIN MODULE and exit to the DOS
BOSS MAIN MENU.

25 Test DOS BOSS menu operation by depressing any key corresponding to an
activity displayed on the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU or a SUB MENU. This activity
should execute with a single keystroke. Upon EXIT TO DOS from this
activity, the DOS BOSS MAIN MENU should again be displayed. If this test
fails, refer to the APPENDIX of this manual for TROUBLE SHOOTING
information.

26 At this stage, ACTIVITY LOG options may be entered if required. Depress
the W Key to load the UTILITIES MODULE.

27 Depress the 2 Key to load the OPTIONS MODULE.

28 After the OPTIONS MENU appears, refer to section 6 of this manual and
enter ACTIVITY LOG options as required. Depress the Escape Key to save
setup data and exit to the OPTIONS MENU.

29 If passwords will be utilized, depress the F08 Key to load the UTILITIES
MODULE. Refer to section 3 of this manual and enter passwords as re-
quired.

If passwords are not required for your system, a SYSTEM PASSWORD beginning
with an asterisk (*) should be entered. This will prevent anyone from
locking you out of your own system.
